Grand Canyon
Located throughout northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon is one of the most studied geological landscapes in the world. The canyon offers a clear record of three distinct geological eras the oldest going back 2 billion years. The Grand Canyon is a 1.6 mile deep canyon that is cut through by the Colorado River and runs 277 miles. In 1908 President Roosevelt established the Grand Canyon as National Monument, followed by President Woodrow Wilson declaring it the 17th U.S. National Park in 1919. Due to the extreme variation in elevation throughout the Grand Canyon, it is inclusive of multiple ecosystems including forests, deserts, and river systems.
